Insect Action! An Alphabet, Rhyming, and Movement Book was designed to grow with children through ages and stages. Feel free to read it in a way that best suits the child’s age and developmental level.
- Use Insect Action! as a picture book. Allow the illustrations of the insects to elicit conversation as you page through the book A to Z
- Read Insect Action! as an alphabet book. Say the name and sound of each letter as you page through the book. The simple font makes letters easier for a child to recognize. Read the name of each insect emphasizing its initial sound. Each insect starts with a hard consonant or short vowel sound, the sounds children learn first when learning to read.
- Read Insect Action! as a rhyming book. Read through the rhyming sentences on each page. Develop a rhythm when you read so the child starts hearing a predictable pattern. The rhyming sentences each begin with a larger letter to help you spot them quickly.
- Use Insect Action! to encourage movement. Insect Action! movement activities can be done during the reading or at a designated time. Choose several movements or do them all. Some movements can be done in small spaces, whereas some require larger areas. Remember to chant together, “Insect Action!” as a signal before doing each movement activity.
- Check out the “Activities to Extend Learning” section at the end of the book for additional learning opportunities.
- Read through the entire book with children who engage for longer periods of time.
